Historical events of note include the establishment of the Sicherheitsdienst's regional headquarters in Euterpestraat in 1940, where torture became routinely practiced. On November 26th 1944 at the request of Dutch resistance members, British bombers targeted this office with bombing raids to destroy as much data as possible resulting in 56 deaths, 14 severe injuries, and 40 light injuries; it resulted in 60 bombed-out survivors and 40 light ones as a result. After World War II had ended, this street was renamed Gerrit van der Veenstraat after resistance fighter Gerrit van der Veen's role during 1943 raid on Amsterdam population registry he helped launch this raid renaming ceremony:
