Watergraafsmeer is a neighborhood located within Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Originally a lake and municipality, since May 1 2010 Watergraafsmeer has become part of Amsterdam district Oost and one of Amsterdam's lowest-lying areas with its average elevation 5 meters below sea level.
Watergraafsmeer boasts a long and fascinating history. Established in 1629 after draining Diemermeer - which linked Amstel with Nieuwe Diep - by draining, 1651 saw Zuiderzee's dike breach and cause the Watergraafsmeer to flood due to an unexpected breakage causing floodwaters from Nieuwe Diep to drain into it and flood Watergraafsmeer itself. In 1843, Watergraafsmeer polder was drained once more. Between 17th and 18th century many wealthy Amsterdam residents constructed country houses here; only Frankendael still stands today. Middenweg and Kruisweg served as main roads dividing up Watergraafsmeer into quarters almost equally; Maliebaan served as an important road where maliespel (a traditional Dutch sport) was played on it; more recently in 20th century went Gooiseweg and Ringweg Oost (A10) were added as well.
Watergraafsmeer was an independent municipality from May 1, 1817 until January 1, 1921 with approximately 10,000 residents. At its founding, it mainly engaged in agriculture with horticulture and animal husbandry practices prevalent. Suburban housing began being constructed around 1900 at Hogeweg and Bredeweg. Watergraafsmeer had ambitious expansion plans aimed at avoiding Amsterdam annexation; however these were disrupted in 1914 due to mobilization resulting in its eventual incorporation by Amsterdam following World War I's conclusion.
