Omval is a neighborhood located on the eastern shore of Amsterdam's Amstel River in Weesperzijde district. Originally part of Ouder-Amstel municipality, Omval's location between its bend in Amstel River and Watergraafsmeer polder (drained during 17th century) contributed significantly to its history and charm. Subsequently in 1921 it was annexed into Amsterdam city limits as an official neighbourhood.
Omval was once an industrial area on the edge of Amsterdam, but today it has evolved into a vibrant business district near its center. Home to many businesses - such as Blooker cocoa factory which operated from 1946-1964 on Omval - as well as its 1886 gatehouse being restored for use as a cafe - Omval offers something for every business venturer and visitor in Amsterdam.
In the late 20th century, Amsterdam City Council approved plans for three high-rise office buildings on Omval named for renowned Dutch painters: Rembrandttoren (Rembrandt Tower), Mondriaantoren and Breitnertoren. Rembrandttoren stands out as the tallest building; next to it lies Hogeschool van Amsterdam Leeuwenburg location which covers an area of 65.000m2. Along the Amstel River there are also apartment blocks along with office buildings.
