Betondorp, located in Amsterdam's Oost district, was constructed between 1923 and 1925 as a garden village on Watergraafsmeer as an experiment using extensive concrete construction; due to this use, the name became widely known. Similar to Bloemhof in Rotterdam, Betondorp was intended as an experiment into concrete usage in public housing developments.
On November 20th 2022, this neighborhood was designated as a municipally protected cityscape.
At the time of its establishment, there was a severe lack of skilled construction workers and brick prices were constantly on the rise due to high demand. Following World War I, affordable housing became essential. Therefore, a neighborhood of 900 houses was constructed at the edge of Watergraafsmeer municipality away from existing buildings in Amsterdam-Oost and Watergraafsmeer's core - this neighborhood would include both brick and concrete homes. Concrete was selected due to its affordability and reduced need for construction workers. Betondorp implemented ten concrete systems selected from 50 submissions; their executors each hired an architect - Han van Loghem and Dick Greiner were two such examples, who designed an entire village of houses with flat roofs for each one of these systems.
Jan Gratama and Gerrit Versteeg designed Betondorp using a garden city concept. The neighborhood centered on a central square called "Brink," where main streets converge. On this square there are commercial homes as well as central facilities such as shops, a library and community centers; initially there were no churches or cafes; street names derive from rural and agricultural concepts, such as Brink, Landbouwstraat Veeteeltstraat Kouterstraat etc.
Betondorp stands out as being more spacious than older neighborhoods in Amsterdam. Parks and courtyards can be found throughout this neighborhood; The Brink stands out as having closer packed buildings for an urban feel.
