The Plantage district in Amsterdam-Centrum is home to the iconic Artis Zoo and separated from Grachtengordel by Plantage Muidergracht. This neighborhood's history is quite intriguing: prior to city expansion in 1663, buyers did not flock here and thus development stagnated, leading to gardens and pleasure grounds being created for Amsterdam residents' pleasure. Plots were leased from the city for 20 years with the intention of eventually selling them but only temporary structures could be built there.
One of the Plantage's most impressive features is the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, established since 1682 and located directly opposite Wertheimpark - which serves as one of two parks located within Centrum district of Amsterdam. 1838 saw Royal Zoological Society open Artis Zoo; Prinsengracht extended east from Muidergracht until it divided the zoo, although three ponds within Artis complex still stand as reminders to an extension that was closed off by filling-in of part of canal that was filled in 1866 dividing Artis from Artis complex.
After 1860, development intensified rapidly within Singelgracht. Plantage emerged as an architectural oasis within Singelgracht with 19th-century architecture; today, this residential neighborhood still features green spaces and its main street is called Plantage Middenlaan; other streets begin with "Plantage", such as Parklaan, Kerklaan Doklaan Badlaan Lepellaan Franselaan Henri Polaklaan Muidergracht Westermanlaan Prinsenlaan and Plantagekade.
The Plantage was also an entertainment district during the late 19th century with theaters and dance halls providing forms of entertainment. By 1920s it became well known for its vibrant Jewish theater scene with several Jewish theater companies performing there.
