Heijplaat, also known as Charlois in Rotterdam, is a neighbourhood. The neighborhood is located south of the Nieuwe Maas, and is surrounded to the east and west by the Eemhaven. Waalhavenweg is the only way to reach this area from Waalhaven South.
Heijplaat is a place with a long history. It was originally a residential neighborhood for the workers of Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij, which started maintenance and shipbuilding in 1904. It was a relatively remote neighborhood from Rotterdam, making it difficult for workers to get there. The name is a reference to the now-disappearing village De Heij, which was located nearby. The NV Bouwmaatschappij Heyplaat, founded in 1914, commissioned construction of a garden village. The garden village was developed and designed by the Architectenbureau van H.A.J. Baanders, Jan Baanders Sr.
Early in the 1920s the garden village became a complete community, with its own shops, schools, churches, and party hall. Many of the original garden village structures are still visible in many of today's buildings. The three original churches are arranged in a beautiful way along the central residential street. Quarantine Station Heijplaat, a quarantine station for sailors suffering from contagious illnesses, was established in 1934 directly west of Heijplaat at the Nieuwe Maas. The site has become a rugged terrain. The idyllic river beach is the only natural sand beach in Rotterdam, and it is very popular. In the 1950s 300 houses were designed by architect J.W.C. Boks was added to the area.
There was previously a ferry between Heijplaat in Rotterdam West and Schiemond Harbor. The metro was opened in February 1968 and the Rotterdam City Council decided to stop the ferry service by December that same year. RDM maintained its ferry service from Rotterdam West for its employees until 1983. Heijplaat was even more isolated after the ferry service was discontinued. Aqualiner resumed ferry service in May 2008 between Heijplaat, Rotterdam's center and landing points at Sint Jobshaven & Willemsplein. Aqualiner, which connected Heijplaat with the center of Rotterdam until July 2015, is now Waterbus Line 18, and continues to operate as such.
