Pendrecht is located in the southern portion of Rotterdam's Charlois borough. The area was constructed in the 1950s beginning in 1949. The area is bordered to the west by the Groene Kruisweg, to the north by the Oldegaarde, to the east by the Zuiderparkweg, and to the south, it's the Charloisse Liedijk. Slinge is the main shopping street and thoroughfare in the area. Plein 1953, the main shopping centre in Pendrecht, is located at the heart of the city. The streets in this area are named for places in Zeeland and Zuid-Holland that were affected in February 1953 by the flooding disaster.
Pendrecht is named after a hamlet located on the island IJsselmonde to the south of the present neighborhood. By the end of 18th century, the hamlet had been almost depopulated (18 residents in 1795) before it was annexed to Rhoon by France. Rotterdam suffered a severe housing shortage after World War II. The bombing on May 14, 1940, caused 80,000 people to become homeless and destroyed 25,000 homes. It was also expected that the population of New York would explode. It was necessary to create new neighborhoods that would provide enough housing for the future. This led to Pendrecht becoming a city of high-rise buildings.
Lotte Stam Beese, an urban planner, was hired to design Pendrecht's neighborhood. The idea of designing homes with 3 to 4 bedrooms and a separate living area, with gardens for large families was revolutionary. Stam-Beese's vision for Pendrecht was open streets, lots of greenery and a mix of different populations living side by side. Planned precisely were neighborhood shops, community stores and schools. Even the distance to walk to church or school was precisely calculated. The neighborhood was not abandoned, except for perhaps larger purchases or participation to cultural activities. Pendrecht's entire structure was built around this idea of a neighborhood that had its own personality. The homes formed a neighbourhood, and the neighborhoods formed a town. The homes were designed so that large and small families, as well as the elderly could all live together.
