Zuidwijk, a 20th century residential neighborhood in Rotterdam's Charlois district, is located on the southern side of the area. The Slinge is a main shopping and traffic street that is bounded by Zuiderparkweg to the west, Oldegaarde to the north, Vaanweg to the east, and Havenspoorpad, which was the old track for the harbor railway, in the south.
After the 1940 bombings of Rotterdam, the neighborhood was constructed in the 1950s. The temporary housing built after the 1940 bombing was on vacant spaces at the southern edge the city. These included the Brabant village on the site where the Zuidplein is now and the Smeetsland emergency village in IJsselmonde. The Wielewaal neighbourhood was created 9 years after the bombing, with the construction similar houses. However, the housing shortage in the city was so severe that ambitious plans were made for public housing, which led to the Southern Garden Cities Zuidwijk Pendrecht Lombardijen.
Zuidwijk was built in polder Charlois, and in a lesser extent, in polder Smeetsland. The manor Lombardijen consisted of a farm of 21 morgen. The fief belonged to the Houses of Wassenaar, Zuidwijk and Smeetsland. It still exists as a house in Wassenaar. Three polder routes had to be removed: the Korperweg, the Smitshoekseweg, and the Charloise Lagedijk. The former farms Beukhoeve en Kapel, as well as four houses in a vanished part of Charloise Lagedijk, have been preserved. This is a national landmark from the 18th Century of the Overmaasse type with a brick detached house for the threshingmill and a wooden zwingelkeet to process the first flax, called the zwingelen. The site is located on a hill and there was once a chapel on the spot. The meadow that is conserved next to the farm has been designated as an archaeological site because it contains at least one “donk” (a type ancient settlement).
The neighborhood was constructed in the style and modernity of Functionalism. Willem van Tijen is one of the architects who designed the neighborhood. The low-rise and stacked houses of the kampen-deelbuurt neighbourhood were designed by Gerrit Rietveld. He is best known for the iconic Rietveld Schroder House, located in Utrecht.
