Waalhaven, a Rotterdam neighborhood, is known for its large, dug-out harbour that covers 310 hectares. It's the largest in the world. The harbor is located in Rotterdam and opens into the Nieuwe Maas. It provides direct access to sea via Scheur and Nieuwe Waterweg. Businesses dealing with the storage and trading of petroleum were established along the river in 1876. These activities were relocated to a safer area in 1935, due to a new designation.
Rotterdam's city council proposed the Waalhaven Harbor in 1907. The land needed was obtained by confiscating polder Robbenoord en Plompert. The land was drained, and used for various purposes including the development Kralingse bos. In 1919 it was decided to build a Vliegveld Waalhaven airport, south of Waalhaven. On July 26, 1920 the first plane to land from London used the airport for air cargo. During the German invasion of May 1940, German paratroopers took over the airport and quickly overran the Dutch defense. Both Dutch and British aircraft dropped 60 tons of explosives on the airport and its surroundings. The airport was quickly integrated into the harbor industry after the war and today there is no trace left.
