Waalhaven, a Rotterdam neighborhood, is known for its large, dug-out harbour that covers 310 hectares. It's the largest in the world. On July 26, 1920 the first plane to land from London used the airport for air cargo. During the German invasion of May 1940, German paratroopers took over the airport and quickly overran the Dutch defense. Both Dutch and British aircraft dropped 60 tons of explosives on the airport and its surroundings. The airport was quickly integrated into the harbor industry after the war and today there is no trace left.
