Spaanse Polder is a business and residential neighborhood located on Rotterdam's border with Schiedam. Although named "Spainse Polder," its origin lies elsewhere - more precisely it is derived from Rotterdam district "Spangen," situated south of this business district.
Spaanse Polder has been an industrial center since 1935, when many businesses first located there to cater to Rotterdam's port. Accessible via water through Schiedamse Schie and Delfshavense Schie, as well as highways A13 and A20 which pass directly through it. Spaanse Polder lies 1.5 kilometers from Rotterdam Central Station and 1 kilometer from Rotterdam-The Hague Airport.
Spaanse Polder covers an area of approximately 190 hectares, and in 2010 was home to about 700 businesses operating primarily within wholesale, automotive, food service and food manufacturing industries. Together with Bedrijventerrein Rotterdam Noord-West and Bedrijventerrein Airport Rotterdam-The Hague it forms the largest urban business district in the Netherlands.
Spaanse Polder's most iconic building is the Van Nellefabriek, a national monument from 1929 that now serves as a congress center, office building and incubator for creative businesses. However, most of the remaining businesses located there belong to environmental categories 3 or higher; according to Rotterdam City authorities, Spaanse Polder should mainly accommodate real factories rather than companies in environmental categories 2 or lower that can also fit within residential areas.
