Waldeck is located in The Hague's Loosduinen neighborhood. The neighborhood was named after H.C. Waldeck (1850-1872), a former mayor in Loosduinen. Waldeck is divided in Waldeck, Waldeck Zuid, and Nieuw Waldeck. It is bordered with the neighborhoods of Loosduin, Kijkduin, and Ockenburgh.
The majority of the neighborhood was built on land that was once used for Rusthoek Sand Extraction. This marshy area was bought by Pieter Frederik Leonardus Waldeck and his wife Louise Marie Waldeck - Welsink in 1877. The area was known then as the Geest of Waldeck. It became apparent that The Hague, a growing city, was interested in housing construction opportunities in the area after the final annexation by The Hague of Loosduinen in 1923. Louise Marie Waldeck sold the Geest in 1928. This led to the end agriculture in this area, and to the construction of the neighborhood in the 1960s.
P.F.L. Waldeck was the son of Loosduinen mayor H.C. Waldeck. He was active in agriculture, promoting exports of Dutch agricultural products, and promoting Dutch agricultural products, until he died at a young age during an election meeting in The Hague’s “Het Gouden Hoofd”. He was secretary-treasurer and chairman of Hollandsche Maatschappij van Landbouw. He also founded the Nederlands Rundvee Stamboek. The name Waldeck pays homage to this landowner, agricultural promoter and landowner.
In 1882, the WSM steam trolley was the first to connect this area "under" the Oude Haagweg. It ran until 1932. The first electric tram was introduced in 1928 on the Laan van Meerdervoort tram line 20. It ran "above" this area. After 50 years, tram line 2 (4th) was introduced on the Oude Haagweg in 1983. In 1985 tram line 3 (3rd), which ran through Aaltje Noorderwierstraat and came into the neighbourhood, was extended. This is RandstadRail 3 since 2007. RandstadRail 3 is the only one which runs through the Waldeck.
