C-Buurt is also known as Wijk C and is located in the northwest corner of Utrecht's city centre. The neighborhood is bordered to the north by Weerdsingel WZ, to the east by Oudegracht, to the south by Lange Viestraat, and to the west, Catharijnesingel, formerly Catharijnebaan.
C-Buurt's history dates back to the Middle Ages when, around the year 1,000, a large harbour complex was located in the area. Archaeological discoveries have revealed medieval ships in the area and nearby. C-Buurt was included in the city walls after Utrecht gained city rights in 1122. The neighborhood was called Handvoetboog between 1573-1795 and named after the civic militia consisting of citizens. The French Empire annexed the neighborhood in 1811 and it was given a letter designation. C-Buurt, however, is still known by this name.
The character of the neighborhood changed in the 19th century due to the destruction of overcrowded housing, and the outbreak of cholera. In 1934, Sisters Augustinessen Sint-Monica founded Meisjesstad - a home for teenage mothers and homeless girls - in the Waterstraat of C-Buurt. In the 1970s another demolition wave took place, leading to the construction and creation of Sint Jacobsstraat.
C-Buurt was known for its Orange-mindedness. Jacoba Johanna van Schoonheim (also known as "Oranje Ka") played a part in this. Oranjestraat became the name of the Zandstraat in 1863 where she operated a pension. The Catharijnestraat took the name Willemstraat after King Willem 3. Oranjepark was established on Van Eeckerenplein in C-Buurt, C-Buurt, in 1883. It lasted until 1940. In 1885, the first official edition, Prinsesse-dag - Koninginnedag's predecessor - was held at this location.
