Ondiep, a neighborhood of Utrecht in the Netherlands, is located between the Vechtstraatweg and the Amsterdamsestraatweg, in the Noordwest area. The neighborhood is typical of working-class neighborhoods and dates back to early 20th century. The neighborhood is still home to many residents, even when they marry and have children. In recent years the neighborhood has seen a large influx of young working adults and students. Ondiep, one of Vogelaar's 40 neighborhoods, had a 2017 population of 4,680.
The Vecht River basin is where the neighborhood is located. The name "Ondiep", which means "shallow" in Dutch, is appropriate given that before the river was regulated it used to create areas of shallow water. Ondiep, a typical Utrecht working-class area, is located just north of the center. The first homes date back to the early twentieth century.
Ondiep was built in 1915. The main streets were planned and constructed in the 1920s, based on the plan of H.P. Berlage and Utrecht official L.P. Holsboer. Stemvork, a unique pattern created by main streets to create a connection between Ondiep's city centre and Ondiep. Along with housing, sports grounds and a school have been built along the Stemvork. In 1923 the Framboosstraat, along with four side streets, was constructed. Ondiep XII was only accessible via a gate called the Tweede Hooipoort after the gate at Wijk C. Ondiep XII (Geuzenwijk), which was partially occupied by residents of the demolished Wijk C, was meant to be a housing-school, but there was little supervision provided. The conditions of the area were so bad that the Stichting Volkswoningen was assigned to supervise it after World War II. However, the neighborhood's reputation remained poor. In 1975, the foundation was disbanded and all of the houses were replaced by new construction.
Ondiep has several smaller neighborhoods, each with a different atmosphere, character, and type of housing. These neighborhoods include Kleine Wijk (built between 1915 and 1920, but replaced with new construction in 2010), Witte Wijk, Bomenbuurt and Fruitbuurt.
Recently, plans have been made to restructure the neighborhood. Project Levenslustig Ondiep was one of these plans, launched in 2003 by the Province of Utrecht as part of its Nieuw Wonen Program. The project aimed to improve the quality and life of the community by renovating existing homes, building new ones, and creating more green space.
