Geuzenwijk, a neighborhood of Utrecht in the Netherlands, is located in Noordwest, a subdistrict within Zuilen. The Geuzen, who fought during the Eighty Years' War are the inspiration for the name of the neighborhood. Streets in the area have been named after historical figures like Blois van Treslong. Koppestok. Cornelis Roobol. Ruychaver. and Sonoy. The neighborhood was historically known as "Betonbuurt", or the concrete neighborhood, because of the white worker-built homes that were built in the 1930s.
Geuzenwijk has a long history. It is home to several schools, including the Salvatorschool and the Jan Ligthartschool. The Scheepstraschool no longer exists. The Aboe Da'oedschool and other small shops have also come and gone. The Noorderbad is a large swimming pool, which was opened in 1934 but closed in 1994. The site was repurposed as housing.
Mitros, a social housing organization, demolished 200 social housing units on the south-side of the Geuzenwijk neighbourhood in 2008 as part of "Utrecht Verrnieuwt", a project that aimed to improve the neighborhoods of Utrecht. The Utrecht Vernieuwt project was designed to improve neighborhoods by replacing and renovating 9500 social housing units. Mitros built new houses between 2009 and 2011. Some were for social housing, while others were for private sale or rental. A portion of the neighborhood that was demolished around the Van der Marckstraat is still vacant.
Geuzenvestecomplex was one of the new developments built in 2011 as a result. It is located at the corner of Van Hoornekade and Marnixlaan. The complex includes 161 houses for private rent or sale, a Careyn healthcare facility, and the Center for Youth and Family.
