Diegem's history dates back to when the Woluwe River was crossed at the voorde. The Lediaan Sandstone was extracted in the 19th century and transported by the Budasteenweg. In 1866 the railway line 36, which crosses the municipality's territory from west to eastern, was inaugurated. In 1937-1938, the Woluwe River was vaulted and canalized. The Woluwelaan Road was built on the space created in the 1950s. In the 1950s-60s, when the airport at Zaventem expanded, a large part of the original Diegem-Lo hamlet was destroyed. In 1976-1977, the construction of the Brussels Ring was completed in Diegem. In 1943, it was decided to demolish the spire from the St. Catharine and St. Cornelius Church in Melsbroek to make room for the runway at the airport. The same fate was also visited upon Machelen Helmet and Steenokkerzeel. In negotiations with the Germans they met architect Frans de Groodt who suggested dismantling spires down to the ground floor. The stones were all numbered and stored under a temporary roof in the old cemetery. Florent d’Hulst, who was hired for the job, completed it within 35 days. The ministerial services approved the reconstruction on December 5, 1946 after determining that it would not disrupt air traffic. The reconstruction was completed by the end September 1951 when the wind vane and cross were installed.
