Kralingse Bos is a neighborhood in Rotterdam known for its proximity to Kralingse Plas. Spanning an approximate 200 hectares, its borders include Kralingse Plaslaan, Kralingseweg, Bosdreef and Boszoom; it is commonly referred to as Kralingerhout. Half of this area consists of water while half features forests and grasslands; several restaurants can be found along its lakes as well as two mills and sailing marina. Athletic fields surround Lange Pad for further sporting opportunities while recreational beaches see high visitor numbers during summer months.
Kralingse Bos boasts a deer camp, several pancake houses, a petting zoo, climbing forest, golf course, fitness track and horse riding school - in fact it has hosted the Concours Hippique International Officiel (CHIO) competition since 1948!
Kralingse Bos dates back to the early 20th century when G.J. de Jongh, Director of Municipal Works for Leiden City Hall, designed a plan for a forest or city park along the Noorderplas, now Kralingse Plas - its original name being Kralinger Hout. In 1911, a plan was approved by the city council that sought to raise polders with material taken from Waalhaven dredging operations. However, construction of the harbor was hindered by World War I. Finally in 1928, enough land had been raised for planting specially grown oak trees from North Brabant on special tree planting days held at Rotterdam schools. Rotterdam school children participated actively in planting trees. In the 1930s, unemployed people participated in building and planting of Kralingse Bos as part of an employment program. Many trees from this forest were burned during Hunger Winter; bombed city center debris was dumped at Plas in its southern corner to form islands accessible via footbridges that became hiking routes for hikers. Finally, on December 15, 1953 it officially opened for business as the Kralingse Bos.
In 1970, Kralingse Bos first gained widespread recognition due to a large concert held there which attracted over 100,000 attendees and remains one of Rotterdam's premier events to this day.
