Hillegersberg-Noord is a neighborhood in the city of Rotterdam, located in the borough of Hillegersberg-Schiebroek. Originally, the neighborhood was a separate municipality called Hillegersberg. It included the present neighborhood of Ommoord. Hillegersberg, along with other municipalities, was merged in 1941 into Rotterdam.
The neighborhood was named after Hildegard von Flanders who, in the 10th Century, was the wife to Count Dirk II from Holland and West-Friesland. The village centre around the Hillegondakerk Church is well preserved, because it was built on an old Dutch hill called a "donk", or "morre". The hill is actually a sandridge formed by riverbeds that dried. The river dunes formed during the last glacial period. There have also been discoveries of Roman artifacts and prehistoric habitation, including a statue of Hadrian.
Hillegersberg was formed by a sandhill created when a giantess called Hillegonda poured sand out of her apron and built her home on top. Hillegersberg's coat of arms features a giantess Hillegonda wearing a torn-up apron. Huis ten Berghe, a castle and church were located on the hill. In 1269, the castle was mentioned in a historical document. It was owned by different people over time. The castle and church were destroyed in 1426 by Jacoba's Bavarian armies during the Hoekse-Kabeljauwse conflict.
