IJburg is a residential neighborhood located east of Amsterdam in Noord-Holland province of the Netherlands. Situated on an artificial island archipelago within IJmeer lake, it forms part of Oost district of Amsterdam.
IJburg's initial phase of development began in 1999 with the creation of three islands: Steigereiland, Haveneiland and Rieteilanden. By 2001, its first building - a telephone exchange - had been finished and residents started arriving. Although some setbacks occurred with regard to housing construction delays, residents began moving in 2002. By late 2007, there were over 8,000 residents; by 2008 this number had grown further up to 10,000 residents.
IJburg's second phase of development began in 2013 with the construction of Centrummeiland island. Construction on homes began here in 2018 and is anticipated to include around 1,500 homes; construction on Strandeiland should start shortly thereafter for up to 8,000 homes for roughly 20,000 residents - beginning sometime around 2023.
