IJburg is a residential neighborhood and Vinex location to the east of Amsterdam in North Holland's province of North Holland. This Vinex location stands out due to being situated on an archipelago of artificial islands in IJmeer: Steigereiland, Haveneiland, three Rieteilanden islands (Steigereiland Haveneiland Centrummeiland Strandeiland as well as Buiteneiland in future), Centrummeiland Strandeiland as well as its future Buiteneiland make up this neighborhood that belongs to North Holland's province North Holland region of course! Part of its eastern district.
Construction on the islands and development of their surrounding neighborhood began in 1999. Construction took place in two stages - with Phase 1 consisting of Steigereiland, Haveneiland and Rieteilanden being completed first and Phase 2 being initiated two years later on Centrummeiland Strandeiland Buiteneiland respectively.
In 1999, construction of IJburg's first phase commenced: Steigereiland, Haveneiland and Rieteilanden were created in IJmeer. Due to high water saturation levels, settlement time took around five years; this was reduced to three or four years with vertical drainage pipes installed along streets and canals, causing ground sinkage of approximately twenty centimeters by 2001 when the telephone exchange was completed; subsequent delayed home building meant residents moved into Haveneiland-West/Grote Rieteiland in November 2002 while homes on Steigereiland were also occupied; by 2007 total population reached 8,000 and by May 30 2008 the 10,000th resident was registered;
IJburg was originally planned to be completed by 2012 with 18,000 homes for 45,000 residents and providing work for 12,000 people, as well as housing schools, shops, sports facilities, restaurants, a beachfront location, sports clubs and cemeteries planned. Unfortunately, due to factors including declines in housing prices from credit crises and budget cuts combined with Council of State bans on November 24th 2004 due to insufficient research on environmental effects a number of these plans were never realized; and by 2019 IJburg has become the most expensive Vinex location within Netherlands terms of housing prices - and this plan had not even begun as anticipated!
Pumping of Centrumeiland was completed by 2014 and construction of 1,500 homes began shortly afterwards in 2018. Pumping up of Strandeiland started in 2018 as well, and once complete will contain around 8,000 homes to accommodate approximately 20,000 residents - home construction could start around 2023; according to its urban plan Muiderbuurt will be built on the southern portion while Pampusbuurt on its northern section with Strandbuurt serving as its centerpiece.
