Meerssenhoven, a historical neighborhood in Maastricht (Netherlands), is located to the northeastern side of town. The park and estate, which resembles a castle, have been kept in pristine condition since the 18th Century. The Kasteel Meersenhoven estate and park is now a grouping of 12 national monuments. This includes the buildings, the bridges and the garden ornaments.
Meerssenhoven lies in the northernmost part of Maastricht, south of Itteren in the Meerssen Municipality and southwest of Bunde. The Geul river flows northwards from the estate to the Maas.
The origins of Meerssenhoven go back to a medieval castle called "Mertzena", which was owned by Hendrik van itteren who was a vassal for the Valkenburg lords. Over the years, the castle has been owned by a number of different people and had many residents. Some of these were notorious for their unsavory behavior towards shipping merchants and traders on the Maas River.
