Malpertuis, a residential post-war neighborhood in Maastricht in the Netherlands, is located west of the city. The neighborhood is located on a slightly rolling terrain, south of Caberg Hill. It is one of 44 official districts in the municipality of Maastricht. Malpertuis, part of Maastricht-West, is bordered to the north by Malberg, the east by Oud-Caberg, the northeast by Caberg, the southeast and the south with Pottenberg. Via Regia, the main road connecting Maastricht to Belgium is also known as the Via Regia. The name of the neighborhood, Malpertuis is derived from the castle with the same name that appears in the epic poem Van den vos Reynaerde. All of the streets are named after characters in this medieval tale.
The area that is now Malpertuis was dominated by farms. Most of these were owned and operated by farmers in the village of Oud-Caberg, which is nearby. Caberg was probably founded during the land clearings of late medieval times. Caberg and the surrounding area belonged to Pietersheim's free imperial lordship until 1794. After the arrival of France, the town was incorporated in the municipality of Lanaken. After the split between the Netherlands and Belgium in 1839, Caberg was incorporated into Oud-Vroenhoven. This municipality was annexed to Maastricht by Maastricht, on January 1, 20. In the first decades following the annexation, there was little development. However, in 1954 a plan for development of the area south and southwest of Caberg village was presented.
Construction of Malpertuis began in 1957, according to the plans of city planner Frans Dingemans. Dingemans followed "parish thinking" or "parish philosophies", as laid out in the Expansion Plan in Major Matters (Plan West), a 1954 document. According to the parish philosophy, new housing developments should be designed and built in a way that they function as a parish. This means: the parish church at the center, with schools, community facilities, shops and other amenities surrounding it, housing for workers, officials and recreational areas on the edges. There were housing areas for the rich or for those with social problems (housing school). Malpertuis had 69 houses for families with problems.
