Caberg is a postwar neighborhood located in Maastricht's northwest, one of 44 official neighborhoods and part of Maastricht-West district. Situated atop Caberg Hill near Oud-Caberg (formerly Village Caberg) this neighborhood borders Brusselsepoort on its southern boundary; Malpertuis west; Oud-Caberg northwest; Bosscherveld northeast and Frontenkwartier southeast while Brusselseweg connects two halves along with being the primary route out toward Belgian border while Carl Smuldersssingel and Cabergerweg serve as major routes connecting Caberg with Maastricht centre respectively.
In the western portion of Maastricht's neighborhood are streets named for musical terms like Symphoniesingel, Clavecymbelstraat and Spinetlaan; while in its eastern side streets are named after artists and architects associated with Maastricht such as Pieter Post (architect of Maastricht Town Hall) or Theodoor van der Schuer (painter of interior pieces in Maastricht Town Hall) as well as Jan de Beijer Mathias Soiron Petrus Nicolaaas Gagini Carl Smulders Rob Graafland and Henri Jonas.
Before the 1950s, Caberg consisted of farmland worked by farmers from Oud-Caberg. This village likely originated during the Late Middle Ages; Caberg itself has its first recorded mention in 13th century literature; prior to 1794 it formed part of Pietersheim lordship until incorporation by Lanaken municipality following French invasion.
Maastricht military governors recognized during the 18th century that Oud-Caberg Hill was a weak point in defense, as cannon fire could quickly penetrate it from that height. Before French period began in 1815 and Napoleon Bonaparte returned from exile on Elba, plans were drawn up for building a fort on Oud Caberg but none was ever completed; upon Napoleon Bonaparte escaping Elba he mobilized French army once more and fort commander decided to accelerate those plans; eventually this fort would become Fort Willem I by 1817 and named Fort Willem I
