Borgharen, located in Limburg province of the Netherlands, is a church village located within Maastricht municipality and designated a "Borgharen". This name derives from "borg" (castle) and "haar" (sandy hill ridge). Borgharen existed as its own municipality until 1970. Subsequently it became one of Maastricht's 44 official neighborhoods despite remaining several kilometers outside city proper - its population currently totaling around 1700 residents.

Borgharen and Itteren, located a few kilometers to the north, are two "independent" villages within Maastricht's Municipality that still function autonomously; nearby villages include Limmel and Rothem. Borgharen itself is bordered by two waterways: Julianakanaal and Meuse River. The Meuse River caused several floods in Borgharen during the last decade of the 20th century. Dikes were then constructed around it, leading to an island being formed during high water, meaning that village center no longer floods. Borgharen itself stands at an altitude of 44 meters; Kanjel used to run along Castle Borgharen and Nieuwe Kanjelbeek runs along its southwestern edge; to its northwest lies a residential area developed during second half of 20th century.

Borgharen first received mention (as Hara) by Pope Alexander III in 1178 through a bull, showing that its first mention by Meerssen and its deanery had tax rights to it at that time. At that time it was linked with Valkenburg where its castle was used by its lords to collect tolls along the Meuse River from Maastricht residents causing frequent conflict with them over toll collections on Meuse River tolls collected via Castle lords of Valkenburg; eventually its destruction during war between Duchy of Brabant and Bishopric of Liege left only moat and some foundations standing from when warring parties destroyed it during warring years and only its moat and foundations remain.
