Neerharen, located in Belgium's province of Limburg, was once its own municipality until being merged into Lanaken during municipal restructuring in 1977. Neerharen means "lower haren," alluding to its sandy hills that dominate its terrain.
Neerharen has an ancient past that dates back thousands of years. In 1828, during construction of the South Willemsvaart canal in Neerharen, an antique silver vase (amfora) dating back around 500 BC was discovered in Maas river and now kept at Rijksmuseum of Antiquities in Leiden; believed to originate from Southern Europe it now dates to 500 BC with Latin and Greek characters still unknown in its inscription. Additionally, Roman roads from Nijmegen to Tongeren passed through Neerharen where notable Roman remains such as thermal bath with hypocausts can still be found today dating from 100AD!
After Roman times, this area remained continually inhabited as evidenced by Frankish coins found during archaeological digs. A motte was constructed near an intact Roman villa during the 6th century; Neerharen developed from a Frankish allodium under Loon County that held sessions beneath an apple tree near Ladderstraat and Kasteelstraat intersections in 13th century.
