Neerharen, located in Belgium's province of Limburg, was once its own municipality until being merged into Lanaken during municipal restructuring in 1977. Neerharen means "lower haren," alluding to its sandy hills that dominate its terrain.

A motte was constructed near an intact Roman villa during the 6th century; Neerharen developed from a Frankish allodium under Loon County that held sessions beneath an apple tree near Ladderstraat and Kasteelstraat intersections in 13th century.
