Malberg is a postwar neighborhood located in Maastricht, Netherlands, one of 44 official neighborhoods within its municipality and situated between Dousberg and Caberg. Bordering Malberg on its Belgian side is Zouwdal adjacent to Albert Canal on Belgian side as well as Oud-Caberg to its northeast, Malpertuis to its southeast and Dousberg-Hazendans in its south; Veldwezelt village from Lanaken municipality lies to its west as does Via Regia main road connecting Maastricht to Belgium while serving Maastricht center from where most connections may begin or exit from.
Malberg takes its name from an old Germanic word meaning a place where Germanic law was administered until January 1, 1920 when the area became part of Oud-Vroenhoven and predominantly comprised farmland. Malberg neighborhood was constructed between 1964 and 1970 following a plan crafted by urban planner H.H. van der Wusten following the "parish philosophy" or "parish idea" advocated by public works director JJJJ and sociologist. Van de Venne's plans of expansion and spatial development from 1954 and 1962 respectively can be found outlined in both expansion plans. Historically, this approach to developing neighborhoods held that each new neighborhood should function similarly to a parish: with its church at its center and associated church house/community center as well as associated associations buildings shops and other facilities around it; followed by worker neighborhoods on one side and recreational areas on another side.
Malberg provided 552 homes designated to "problem families", mostly from the Boschstraat quarter which was under renovation, 20 of which were set aside specifically for families with "low positive therapeutic indications." As per housing school philosophy, mixing residents would result in more adaptive behaviour; similar to most postwar neighborhoods in Maastricht, Malberg predominantly consisted of rental properties.
