Heugemerveld, a neighbourhood in Maastricht (Netherlands), is located on the outskirts of the city. Heugemerveld is one of 44 official neighbourhoods within the municipality Maastricht. The neighborhood is located between Maastricht-Luik railway line, the neighborhoods Wyck and Ceramique and the John F. Kennedybrug (N278).
Heugemerveld is steeped in history dating back to medieval times when it was known by the names of Wyck or Akerpoort. The name Heugemerveld is derived by this historical topographical designation. Heugemerveld, the first major urban expansion of Maastricht after World War II, was built to an urban plan by Frans Diesmans. Originally, the neighborhood was a working-class area with mainly rental housing. In recent years many homes were demolished, renovated or rebuilt, and new construction, mostly single-family houses, has been done in the area.
Heugemerveld is a small area with a limited amount of amenities. These include a few restaurants and shops. Ceramique and Wyck are easily accessible to residents of the neighborhood. There was a Roman Catholic church in the neighborhood until 2017. The community center of the school "La Bellettsa", which is located in its annex, hosts activities for the neighborhood.
Heugemerveld is also notable for its architecture and public art. Heugemerweg is a villa in the Neo-Renaissance Style dating from 1880. It is a National Monument. The villa's high basement indicates that the area used to be the winter bed of Maas River up until 1933. Two reliefs depicting La peinture and L’architecture are located on the northwest façade of the villa. The Don Boscokerk, a sleek brick building, was constructed between 1958 and 1962 to an architectural design by Harry Koene of Maastricht. Tom Claassen placed "betonnies" or concrete ponies at ten different locations around the neighborhood in 2007.
