Randwyck, a modern business district and neighborhood located in Maastricht's southeast part, is an area of Maastricht that has a lot to offer. Randwyck is one of 44 official neighbourhoods within the municipality Maastricht. The Maas River, Heugem, Ceramique, Heugemerveld, Heer, De Heeg, and Eijsden Margraten are the borders of the neighborhood.
The name Randwyck comes from the Randwyck Bastion, located on an Island in the Maas River at the site of the Limburgs Gouvernement in 1986. Originally, the area belonged to Heer and Gronsveld. Maastricht annexed the Heer part in 1920 and the southern half in 1970. The area of Randwyck had been reserved initially for the expansion of University of Maastricht. However, since many university institutions decided to relocate their housing in Maastricht's city center, it was given a wider purpose. This included homes and offices. Randwyck's first office buildings date from the late 1970s. In the 1980s-90s, large buildings such as Gouvernement MECC and Maastricht UMC+, as well as small residential areas, were built.
Maastricht University Medical Center Plus, with its 5,800 employees, is one of Randwyck's major employers. Since 2008, the Maastricht University Medical Center Plus has been the name of both the academic hospital of Maastricht as well as the medical faculty of Maastricht University. Vodafone (2,500 jobs in Ceramique), MECC (700 jobs), Mercedes-Benz (600 jobs), WML (400 jobs) and Medtronic (225 jobs) are also major employers. Plans were announced in 2009 for a biomedical complex, called Life & Science Campus Maastricht. It was estimated that 2,500 new jobs would be created. Randwyck was hoped to eventually become a region with around 20,000 job opportunities in the knowledge intensive sector and business service. Later, the campus was renamed Maastricht Health Campus. In 2014, Brightlands was also added. Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus is an initiative of UM, Maastricht UMC+ Province of Limburg City of Maastricht, and LIOF. The campus will have 120 companies by 2021 (including approximately 6,350 Maastricht University+ employees) and 10,286 student. The Maastricht Brain Imaging Center, or Scannexus (MBIC), the Maastricht Multi Modal Molecular Imaging Institute M4I (and the Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine MERL) are all prominent institutes.
