Heugem is an area located southeast of Maastricht in Limburg Province in the Netherlands. Once an agricultural village on the banks of the Maas River, Heugem has since transformed into a residential neighborhood and now ranks among Maastricht's 44 official neighborhoods.
Heugem is located between Randwyck to its north and east, the Maas River to its west, and Eijsden-Margraten to its south. A significant portion of Heugem comprises water features.
Heugem has an extensive history that dates back to 772 AD when an Archangel Michael church was mentioned, though its exact significance remains uncertain. By 1157, Heugem parish had expanded as far as Margraten. Cadier en Keer church affiliated with Heugem until late in 18th century; prior to becoming part of Maastricht in 1920 it had previously been part of Gronsveld municipality where its village center still remains intact today as evidence of Heugem not being an urban neighborhood.
From 1913 until 1979, Heugem was home to a convent of Sisters of the Holy Sacrament and Love - more commonly known in France as Soeurs de la Charite de Bourges - who focused mainly on education and community nursing. Their chapel can still be seen at the corner of Heugemerstraat and De Beente; also nearby was their girls' school - now known as Anne Frank Out-of-School and Toddler Care (Heugemerstraat 215) which are all municipal monuments.
In the 1980s, much of Heugem's surrounding farmland vanished due to land reclamation along the Maas and city expansion north and east of its old center; these processes lead to land being reclaimed along Maas for reclamation projects and Randwyck now known as Heugem's northern area being established as new urbanism zones.
Heugem offers various facilities and an active association life. The village features its own shopping center and multiple catering establishments; its central village center contains Roman Catholic Church of Saint Michael as well as De Klaekeburg neighborhood center; Gronsvelderweg hosts rehabilitation center Vitala+ (formerly nursing home La Valence); Huize Maasveld is a pavilion-like complex designed specifically to serve handicapped individuals; this completes Heugem's offering.
