Kanne is a village located within the Belgian province of Limburg in southeast Belgium and part of Riemst municipality since 1977 when they merged. Prior to merging, Kanne existed as an independent municipality until its merging. Situated near Maastricht on both sides of the Albert Canal since 1930s, with Neerkanne being on its northeast side while Opkanne lies further to its southwestern end - this means part of Kanne lies within Maastricht municipality while part of Opkanne is situated within Wezet (Vise).

Kanne likely began as two domains: Opkanne was donated to Saint Maarten chapter in Liege in 965 as an allodium by allodial court while Neerkanne (originally allodium granted by allodial court in Liege) were both allodiums granted allodial court which granted various families including Van Liers Chabot De Villers Pite Vander Straten De Pallant De Wansoulle Van Dopff De Coenen and De Thier.
