Moerwijk-Oost, a neighborhood in The Hague (Netherlands), is located on the eastern side of the city. It is located in the Escamp district, and borders the neighborhoods of Wateringse Veld and Morgenstond. The neighborhood was constructed before and after World War II. Willem Dudok designed the urban layout.
Moerwijk-Oost has a diverse population. In 2009, 49% of the residents were of non-Dutch descent. By 2018, 75% had migrated. The area is a melting-pot of ethnicities.
Moerwijk-Oost, in terms of architecture was built largely according to Dudok’s plan in 1949. The goal was to connect the neighborhood "Moerwijk 1", which pre-dates 1940, to The Hague's main road system. Around the central Erasmusplein were four neighborhoods, each of which had different amenities, such as a shopping center, a park, or a school. Around the Heeswijkplein, and Betje Wolfstraat were constructed two of the largest shopping centers. The city government sanitized some smaller shopping centres in order to reinforce the larger centers.
Recently, plans have been made to renovate, demolish, and rebuild certain parts of Moerwijk. Some plans call for a mix between expensive and affordable housing in order to increase diversity. These plans have often been a failure due to lack of funding and the downturn in housing markets.
