Laakkwartier-Oost, a historic district in The Hague located between The Hague HS Station (train station) and Rijswijk. The Laak district is home to the Laak neighborhood, named for the old peat-river Laak that runs through the center of the neighborhood before emptying into the Haagvliet. Laakkwartier-Oost borders the neighborhoods of Binckhorst and Moerwijk. It is also bordered by Schilderswijk and Stationsbuurt.
Laakkwartier -Oost is made up of six neighbourhoods: Laakhaven West and oost, Laakkwartier West and oost, Spoorwijk and Noordpolderbuurt including Molenwijk. The Lorentzplein is at the heart of this neighborhood. It is a major traffic hub connecting the Goeverneurlaan to the Oudemansstraat and Van Musschenbroekstraat. Tram rails connect the Lorentzplein with the Goeverneurlaan and Oudemansstraat. Laakkwartier-Centraal is bounded by the Rijswijkseweg, Laakkade, Van Zeggelenlaan, Sinjeur Semeijnsweg, Jan van Beersstraat, and the Paets van Troostwijkstraat. Porticos are common on the large streets. The southern part has a greener character, with views to green areas in the municipality of Rijswijk.
Rijswijk owned the area that is now Laakkwartier-Oost until December 7,1843. Rijswijk gave up the land because it did not want the responsibility of providing police supervision for the new station. At the time, there were only 2 police officers in Rijswijk. The area was extended up to Hoefkade. Rijswijk asked for an annual compensation of 400 guilders (181,50 euros). The municipality of The Hague still pays this amount to date. Laakkwartier-Oost, which is evident in the apartment blocks on De Genestetlaan or Goeverneurlaan, was built circa 1930 using the architectural insight of the Nieuwe Haagse School. The houses on the Genestetlaan south side and in nearby streets like Janssoniusstraat date from before World War II. They are of exceptional quality. The raised towers in the two squares that separate the one-kilometer Goeverneurlaan street into three sections are characteristic of the area.
