Laakhaven-West has a long history in the industrial sector, since it was The Hague's first municipally-designed area. The area was home to many well-known companies, including the De Sierkan Milk Factory, the Felix Cat Food Factory, and the Hus Bread Bakery. The neighborhood was not popular for a long time due to a red light district located on Waldorpstraat. It was closed in 2006
Laakhaven-West, which has been undergoing significant redevelopment in recent years, is now a densely-populated region with many high-rises, including the iconic Lamel Building along the Neherkade. The Lamel building, the Netherlands' longest, stands on the site of a former slaughterhouse. One small part of the wall was preserved. Italian architect Aldo Rosi has redesigned the area surrounding the former slaughterhouse. It features a mixture of single-family and high-rise homes.
Laakhaven West is home to several notable buildings, including the Haaglanden megaStores which is the largest shopping center indoor in the Benelux. The Hague University of Applied Sciences has a new building and a branch of ROC.
