Spoorwijk, a neighborhood of The Hague located in the Laakkwartier borough and Spoorwijk. The neighborhood is bordered by the railway line Den Haag - Rotterdam, the Laak River, Van Zeggelenlaan, and the municipality Rijswijk. It is known for the multicultural community.
Spoorwijk was originally a small neighborhood of worker's houses. They are small (less than 50 sq. meters), and also old in many other ways. The entire area is being renovated, beginning in 1997, with the demolition and development of two residential buildings in the middle. This project won the Nieuwe Stadt Prize for its design.
The neighborhood has been renovated in large parts. Residents, the municipality and housing corporations reached an agreement to undertake a major restructuring. In the end, 1,300 older houses (60%) were demolished to make room for 750 brand new homes. There is a preservation of the street pattern, but now there are more housing options (single family homes, senior housing and apartments). Owner-occupied houses make up a large portion of new construction. In 2004, the city redevelopment of the western part (called "Nieuw Spoorwijk") was awarded the Nieuwe Stad prize again.
Spoorwijk currently has around 4,200 residents and 1,600 houses.
