Groente-en Fruitmarkt is located in The Hague's Centrum district and borders four neighborhoods: Laakkwartier, Spoorwijk, Moerwijk, Transvaalkwartier and Schilderswijk. It has deep ties to its longtime history as the location of an wholesale market selling fruits and vegetables - now long gone from this location - as a prime selling location.
One of the earliest structures in the neighborhood was Het Zomerhof, built between 1921 and 1923 as "control houses," designed to monitor "asocial" families under supervision in an effort to reform them. Demolished in 1963 and replaced with three large apartment buildings and a school, Het Zomerhof eventually saw demolition in 1965 with three apartment buildings replacing it and three more being added in its place by 1924 when Laakkanaal was dug as a connection between Laakhaven and Loosduinsevaart to further shape its neighborhood character.
In 1932, the wholesale fruit and vegetable market moved from Veenkade to Laakkanaal with a harbor and goods railway line to Hollands Spoor station, as well as housing and sports fields nearby. Later, in 1961, however, both were filled in for use as business parks; later still in 1971 the railway line was removed before moving the market to Leidschendam where apartments and single-family homes began appearing in that area.
Groente-en Fruitmarkt's population consists of people of Turkish, Moroccan and Surinamese descent; as of 2014 there were 1979 Turks living here as opposed to 427 Moroccans and 930 Surinamers living nearby.
Since 1886, this neighborhood has long been connected to public transportation via steam tram. Starting out at Scheveningen Station and continuing all the way into Scheveningen until 1927 when electric line 11 replaced it, goods transportation continued between Delftse laan and Scheveningen via two HTM electric locomotives until 1974 (while only using three tracks for use by NS trains; it was removed later that same year). Tram 12 began running along Groenteweg in 1969.
