Gein is located in Amsterdam-Zuidoost's district of Gaasperdam. The Gein River, which flows to the east of this area, is the source of the name. The neighborhood was mostly completed by the end 1980s.
Gein is located on the Polder Gein en Gaasp. It is bordered in the east and south by the provincial border of North Holland with Utrecht, De Hoge Dijk, and the Gaasperzoom. West of the neighborhood, Reigersbos is bordered by the Gaasperplas. The sand mined for Amsterdam-Zuidoost led to the creation of this lake. Gaasperpark, which is nearby, was built between 1977 and 1982 to host the Floriade horticultural show. The majority of the improvements were removed after the Floriade to create a more simple city park. Gaasperplas is a park with a marina and sunbathing spots. The 't Brinkie farm is located near the Gein neighbourhood.
Gein I, Gein II, Gein III, and Gein IIV are the four subdivisions of this neighborhood. The majority of these are rectangular blocks and streets, with low- and medium-rise residential buildings. Gein III and Gein IV are dominated by low-rise structures, built by former councillor Jan Schaefer.
Wisseloord is a shopping area in Gein I. Gaasperdam's street names are primarily derived from the names of Dutch villages, towns and farms. However, there are neighborhoods named after resistance fighters, Amsterdam aldermen and Dutch municipalities.
Gein Metro Station is in the neighbourhood and is the terminal for Metrolijn 50, Metrolijn 54. The latter was known as the Geinlijn for many years and the first as Ringlijn.
This neighborhood also hosts several annual events, such as the Gaasperpleasure music festival that takes place on south shore of Gaasperplas. The festival started as a small local event and has now grown to a two-day celebration with more than 3000 attendees. Reggae Lake Festival takes place in August and, as its name implies, it is primarily reggae-based.
